Welcome to our review of Rampage Knights, a game that’s out now on Nintendo Switch and is quite special to play!
Rampage Knights is a cooperative beat ’em up game mixed up with randomized dungeon crawling and exploration which you can play alone or with a friend.
You play as a hero trapped by a spell in a magical forest. All paths lead you to a nearby ruined castle, infested with goblins, skeletons and other foul creatures. Gear up with awesome and ridiculous weapons and spells and descend into the deep labyrinth below the ruin to face its sinister master!
Try to get as far as possible in a dungeon with randomized items, spells, traps, and encounters. Your hero is upgraded along the way (both visually and gameplay-wise) as you find better weapons, items, magic powers and fight harder and harder monsters.
Rampage Knights is fun to play but a little on the hard side to master, I did enjoy it more and more when I kept playing for longer sessions. The longer you play this randomized game, the more effective your weapons become in this basic beat’m up, this is where its strength lies. At first, you basically have a wooden club and as you go, you can upgrade to venomous swords and the likes. This versatility often kept me going to go deeper and deeper into the game.
As this is a basic beat’m up, you basically get to destroy all the enemies that come at you. Swing the bat, sword or whatever you have in hand. Do your best to avoid incoming hits or projectiles or even jump out of their way and use the momentum to take down an enemy. All in good fun, but that is about where the single player fun ends too. This game was the most fun as a couch co-op during my time with the game and I will tell you all about it.
I played this game with my godchild, who in general hates games like these. And spoiler, he did not love Rampage Knights but he did enjoy the gameplay. His original comment is what made me smile. It felt to him like a game that anyone could play! And I wholeheartedly agree with the boy, nothing about picking up this game is challenging. It takes a minute or 2 to get used to its controls and afterward, it just takes perseverance to keep going or as he said it, tough it out.
In conclusion, a small game in itself, but Rampage Knight does provide a sense of longevity due to its random levels and hack and slash mechanics that can keep you busy in itself. I thought about rating it rather high, but did hold back on a 9 and higher because the single player did not do enough to warrant a score like this. Coop however did, so I am going for an 8!
