Welcome to our review of Bad Dream: Coma, a dark point and click game that takes the term art to a whole new level.
Welcome to Bad Dream: Coma. A point&click game where a unique, minimalistic art style creates an unforgettable and atmospheric experience.
The game is designed in the “action-reaction” way and there are no obvious choices. Beat the game once and then be curious “What if I would do it differently”. Sometimes it’s not so obvious but from time to time you’ll see huge differences. The smallest things can be the most rewarding.
Visit the place known from the previous chapters of the Bad Dream Series. Encounter well-known creatures in their new form, or find the way to erase them from your memory and turn this dream into the peaceful nap.
Bad Dream: Coma is a very dark point and click game, it has puzzles that need solving but also puzzles where you need to find the differences between pictures. There is quite some depth to this game as it is common, the puzzles are usually spread among multiple screens.
When you start playing, it becomes clear that the game was originally released on other platforms as the game mechanics gave this away to me prior to doing my due process in researching the title for my review. When you pick an item and you use the joy-con instead of the touchscreen, you need to cross the entire playing field each time.
Sure, nothing wrong there, but it just feels like the game is best played with touch controls or a mouse on a computer. But enough about that, the value in this game is clearly in its puzzles and its’ darker atmosphere surrounding everything.
My first minute into the game, I was able to kill a crow, which kinda surprised me. Point and click games rarely have such interactions but I did also enjoy it. It just fit the entire feeling you are getting throughout the levels.
The puzzles themselves are also not overly hard to figure out. It always makes sense in a dark and twisted way what direction you need to be thinking. Without giving away too many solutions, when you see a crowbar on the ground, you know to pick it up and use it to get to the next part of the puzzle. Or when you get a beer and someone on the screen says he is thirsty… Does not take a rocket genius to figure it out, right?
But in its simplicity lies also the biggest challenge, the dark nature of the game will make you overlook certain things and you will be going back into some screens just to find out if you really missed something or not? It happened to me a few times and I have gotten quite a few point and click games to the end lately.
In conclusion, Bad Dream: Coma is not the hardest but at the same time, it does pose a challenge enough to value its price.
