Welcome to our review of Warhammer 40000 – Inquisitor Martyr, the newest installment of the Warhammer franchise!
This is actually the First Action RPG in the franchise of Warhammer, a good try yet somewhat flawed at times. You are an Inquisitor, the Imperium’s most powerful agent. In this Action-RPG developed by the creators of The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, search closely the fortress-monastery, Martyr, and purge it of the Chaos lurking behind its walls.
In true Action RPG style, you get sandbox levels at your disposal where you basically clear the rooms of the heathens all around you. You follow the main storyline and try to find out why this ship you are on, is not only appearing to be boarded, is filled with strange things. You got 3 classes to pick from and I went all weapons as my prefered choice.
Heavily loaded, you run through the ship. Mowing down enemies and getting intel on everything that is happening in your part of the world. I love how they made use of the speaker in the controller to get that real feeling of being part of the game. You get incoming calls through it and do pay close attention to them if you are following the storyline closely.
There is also a lot of reading to do, when you find fallen comrades or dead bodies, they often have data slates on them, telling the story as you go further and further down. While you do that, you will notice what makes the game average, at least it did for me. A lot of games of this genre have reload functions for weapons or even cool down periods, but Warhammer went all out, out of my two main weapons, I either overheated or ran out of bullets instantly and often in front of tons of enemies. While this is an annoyance of mine, it might be very appealing to you.
As you are blasting the heathens, it also becomes clear the game decides where it fires for you. I am several levels down the game and still have not figured out why it’s picking enemies on its own instead of just the closest ones. I once went straight into the enemy hideout and started shooting at some sort of turret, while I could have easily stayed out of its sight and take it out with a grenade.
I know you can manually refocus your attention to specific enemies, but it is usually too late as your guy has a mind of his own when it comes to mowing down the heathens. Like I said, some of you might really enjoy this, I like my freedom when playing this genre.
What Warhammer does do right are the graphics which are very impressive and deserve praise for them. The overall feel is very futuristic just as intended, the gore is just right and even with a lot going on, I still felt like the graphics were well above board. The loading screens were my favorite as I very much like the general art style of Warhammer. Not just the games but also the pewter figurines and whoever can paint those, you are truly a skilled artist. I tried but failed miserably.
In conclusion, Warhammer is a great looking action RPG with a minor setback in how the fighting really goes down, at least it was to me. I do think it deserves a fair shot and my rating is 70%.
