Welcome to our review of Old School Musical, a wacky rhythm game on Nintendo Switch.
What has 50 amazing chiptune tracks, a loony story mode, 32 different chicken types to fight, and takes you on a tour of all your favorite retro games? It’s Old School Musical of course!
Tib and Rob are the heroes of a wacky adventure that will teach them where all of the bugs in our favorite games come from. Have you ever played a rhythm game before? Well, this is like that, but much better! With each note, you are responsible for the success of our two heroes’ quest. Swing your sword and shoot with your spacecraft to the beat of chiptune tracks from Dubmood, Zabutom, Hello World, Yponeko and Le Plancton.
Old school Musical is a wacky twist on the genre and at the same time, it is not…
While the premise of rhythm games and the base mechanics are all perfectly followed, namely tapping the right button at the right time. At the same time, it is so storied heavy, with the 2 heroes trying to find their mom after everything turned to scrambles. You got your original Zelda inspired island where they grew up, there is that Megaman style level and so much more.
Everything about this game screams nostalgia and I personally found it to be wacky yet very amusing. Sometimes though, when the action got too intense, I did pay so much more attention to the game rather than the storyline and felt I missed out on the story and even though every level can just replayed to get a perfect score, I kept wanting to finish more levels rather than just replay them again.
To get the full picture, the background is where the story happens and the game itself, it is like an overlay in a picture editing program, on top of the rest. With either the shoulder buttons on the screen or the right buttons that need to be pressed at the right time. The game works on a power bar system and misses too many hits, see your health reduced. Especially happening should you try a hard level from the start.
The game does come with a serious joke level, but I will let you experience this yourself, needless to say, you will be impressed. I say impressed, you might be equally annoyed or surprised, all how you take it. I was amused after I realized what happened.
The one thing that does set OSM apart from the rest is the music which brings back that old style nostalgia and if anything, I would not mind owning its soundtrack, would love to cruise around in my car while listening to it.
In conclusion, OSM is not your everyday game, it is a rhythm game and it feels like it tries not to be and that is what makes it so much fun! A weird storyline to support some fun gameplay and I hope you will enjoy it too!
