Indie Corner: Defunct

Welcome to our review of Defunct, a chill game out now on Nintendo Switch.

Defunct is an indie adventure game with a focus on flow, speed, and an engaging world. You are a broken robot that accidentally falls out of a giant cargo ship onto a post-human Earth, now inhabited by robots. You have to get back to your ship before it’s too late!

You are equipped with a Gravitize engine. It is used to create a separate gravity around yourself; this is the main source of your speed. Use this in downhills to accelerate. But be careful, using it uphill will slow you down. In addition to this, the world is full of different speed boosts such as Enerjuice, which you can pick up and use to go faster.

What I really liked about this game, not being able to die. Regardless of what you do, you always respawn and it made this game very chill. As the little robot, you just scoot around and try to get back to the spaceship. You can choose to speed through the levels or really try to explore as much as possible.

For my gameplay, I tried both and found the discovery to be most rewarding. Sure, you will also find the collectibles in every stage, but most of all, you won’t end up getting lost.

When you hit the continuous speed, sure, you go through the levels way more quickly, but at one point, I fell down a ledge. I ended up taking the left turn instead of the right. Getting faced with a wall, I used my magnetize powers to drive up to the wall, used my boost to do a big jump and after several tries… I ended back up at my previous save point. While I was feeling smug that I made that elaborate move to jump the big gap, I was disappointed at the same time that I was not in the right direction.

If I had been more relaxed in my movements, I am quite sure I would have been in the right direction. Mind you that I am not in any way in a foul mood because of this, it did allow me to further perfect my driving skills that I needed later on and was more fluid at. So I did get my advantage out of a mishap.

While Defunct is a chill game, there might be a lack of pure action for some in the start. It does pick up a little, but it is never an action-packed game or even high paced.

This game is officially labeled a racing game, but I would tend to disagree with that, while the only way to get around is to drive, it has nothing to do with actual racing. Defunct is more like a chill adventure game rather than anything else.

In conclusion, Defunct is more for a relaxing experience. It might not be for anyone looking to get a high paced racing game but if you are in the market for more of a skill based game with a chill overall feeling, do get Defunct, you will love it.
