Indie Corner: Code of Princess EX

Welcome to our review of Code of Princess EX, originally released on 3DS but now out on Nintendo Switch.

Code of Princess EX brings a unique combination of hack-and-slash beat-‘em-up action and role-playing depth to Nintendo Switch!

The story follows Princess Solange of DeLuxia as she fights to restore order in a world where monsters are trying to overtake the human race. Armed with the legendary sword DeLuxcalibur, Solange assembles a team of talented fighters to join her quest. Together, they embark on an epic journey where they will confront the monster uprising and try to discover its secret origins.

Code of Princess EX mixes several gaming mechanics into 1 whole and I had some reservations at first when playing this game. Having originally been on 3DS, it was a little unclear to me how such a risqué title made it onto Nintendo systems, but with the recent releases of Senran Kagura on Switch or Gal Gun, it’s become clear that Nintendo no longer limits similar games from appearing on their systems. To say the least, our main hero Solange is barely dressed…

On the 3DS, it was not so beautiful graphics wise and those graphics are part of the appeal of this version on Switch, aside from its fun yet somewhat limited gameplay. While Code of Princess EX is Aesthetically pleasing, I feel like it is more reserved for the anime loving crowds rather than just anyone. I love the interactions between all characters and yet at the same time the story is a little too elaborate. I just wanted to keep fighting rather than spend most of my game time reading.

Code of Princess EX is a line based battler with 3 main lines that you can pick to fight your enemies. Solange herself has the high powered sword at her disposition which feels very sluggish at first and you really need to get used to how it handles before you can start enjoying the game. The lack of guidance here, all you get is a single screen with all the commands, is something I considered a downside.

Aside from the fighting, there are also clear Role-playing game mechanics like upgrading your characters, leveling up, … But nothing during the fights, those are kept separately, this aspect all happens before a fight, like selecting your weapons of choice in a space shooter or what gear to put in your motor for a racing game.

Once you master the move set and you figure out how the upgrades to your characters work, Code of Princess EX actually becomes an enjoyable game. Faced with a time limit per “fight”, the pace is fast and you will not get bored easily.

In conclusion, the Code of Princess EX game is fun yet has its’ issues and a clear target audience. While I do love anime, I am a massive One piece fan among many others, I can not in good conscience really say this game is for everyone, I would seriously recommend looking up gameplay on YouTube to see if this will fit your fancy. My rating is 70%.
