When all the heroes are slain on the battlefield, no one is home to defend the castle. No-one except some old clergy guy, a princess, a fortune telling gypsy and a jester. If your castle’s defense depends on those characters, you know you might as well wave the white flag and give up. In No Heroes Here, you and three friends get the chance to change the inevitable fate of the castle by taking control of these unlikely heroes and become the saviors of the realm.
Tower defense meets Overcooked
No Heroes Here is, in essence, a tower defense game. You manage the canons attached to the castle walls to fend off hordes of enemies. The “recipe making” part comes in the way you actually arm your cannons. Before you can arm your cannons, you’ll need to make cannonballs and gunpowder. Your castle only got the raw materials and it’s up to you to make these into useful things. The process of making takes a few steps all while your being attacked from different sides of your castle.
Everything boils down to managing your resources as efficiently as possible in No Heroes Here. Every step takes a certain amount of time and occupies a workstation that could be needed for another kind of resource. Taking the right decisions and maximizing the workstations you have is key. As if that wasn’t enough, No Heroes Here throws some platforming your way by making the layouts of each castle harder and harder to go around. You’ll know what I’m talking about if you need gunpowder really bad and you fall a floor down to end up losing way too much time.
4 player co-op gameplay
Although the game offers a way to play solo, I would not recommend this, since this mode is almost impossible to play. I tried… I failed. No Heroes Here is designed to be played with friends, preferably on your own couch. The amount of stuff you’ll need to manage to successfully defend your castle makes co-op gameplay a necessity. Please be cautious as to which friends you’ll ask to play this game. It may test your friendship…
Looks can be deceiving
No Heroes Here presents itself as yet another cute-looking retro-style game. While the colors are vibrant, and the characters look adorable, you’ll soon find out that the gameplay is relentless. When you need to defeat a troll, who takes 3 hits, you’ll know just how hard this game can be. No Heroes Here offers a few extra things to shoot at your enemy to keep the upper hand whilst managing your plan of defense. For example, honey and ice can both be shot at your enemy to slow them down and make use of your cannonballs in the most efficient way.
Conclusion
No Heroes Here is a hard game that will test your (and your friends) will to succeed. Some castles will take you many tries – and a lot of shouting – to successfully finish. If you’re into a challenge and have friends who can handle the heat, be sure to pick this game up.
