Hands-on: Dragon Ball FighterZ on Nintendo Switch

At the Nintendo post-E3 event in the Netherlands, I was lucky to go hands-on with Dragon Ball FighterZ and I was very impressed!

We all know the story behind this game, it was coming to other consoles but not to Nintendo Switch until it was mentioned oh so briefly in the Nintendo Direct for E3. In the big reel of everything to come, suddenly it showed FighterZ and let me tell you, I was very happy to see this game coming to Switch.

For those of you that do not know what FighterZ stands for, it is a classic style 2D fighting game, sporting some very fine anime graphics. It is basically a very fine looking fighter going back to basics.

On the post E3 event, I was lucky enough to go hands-on and wow, I admit I was incredibly impressed by this game and I might even go as far as to say it was in my humble opinion the most impressive one. This game just looks like an actual anime and it played so fluently. It was a true delight.

Whilst playing the game, a basic three on three fighting system is used and I had Frieza, Android 18 and Majin Buu, yeah, I love playing as bad guys. The game just plays so smoothly, I went from one attack to the other to getting pummelled to take the upper hand again and pummeling my opponent.

Throughout the entire match I had, my very first time playing the game, it was actually quite clear how easy it was to handle the characters. Without any prior experience at all, I managed to play a real bout against an experienced player. Needless to say, I am proud to have won my battle.

Important to note is the way the Pro Controller handled itself, I have made mention before that the Pro Controller is really a nice piece of hardware. I will declare my love for the controller once more, I love this beast in my hands and despite usually going for handheld mode, the pro controller is quite amazing. I especially like how the top buttons are mapped and in this game specifically, I never once clicked the wrong top button, which is, in itself, quite good. I mean really, my first try playing the game and while one guy watching my gameplay was saying this was a button mashing game, I totally disagree.

There is so much more to this game than just randomly whacking the buttons. You can really outline what to do and how to follow em up with even more impressive moves. I was even lucky enough to trigger Gold Frieza in my short session. I literally can’t wait to play more of FighterZ!
