Review: Yoku’s Island Express

Welcome to our review of Yoku’s Island Express, a game unlike any others, a pinball action game.

Say hello to Yoku the Dung Beetle, a new hero who has arrived on Mokumana Island to relieve the resident pterodactyl postmaster, or Posterodactyl, as he’s known, of his duties.

He’s ready for the easy life, soaking up the sun and delivering parcels on a tropical paradise! However, Yoku will quickly discover that an ancient Island deity is trapped in a restless sleep, and a host of colorful, quirky islanders are plagued by quakes and storms brought forth by its nightmares.

It’s all down to Yoku to traverse the island using a unique blend of pinball mechanics and open world exploration, in an amazing quest to help those in need!

Flip and bump our pint-sized protagonist around the stunning hand-painted island on your quest to rebuild the post-office, discover the mystery of the Fruit Altar, and wake an old god from its slumber.

I was lucky enough to play this game on Xbox One and I can already say I had tons of fun. This game is like no other and I can’t even start to describe how incredibly novel this game is. As Yoku, the dung beetle, you walk around with your “pinball” in tow, pushing it around. In true fashion, a little like in a typical Metroid game, you follow a certain path on your way to fulfill the tasks.

You use the flippers on the current screen to move around and collect fruits along the way. Every few flippers, they are blocked off, so you need some of those fruits to unlock them. Sometimes you find treasure chests and sometimes you need to use the kinetic energy of bumping around to break obstacles. Words can not really do this game justice, I would recommend checking out some gameplay videos to see just how cool this game really is.

Another thing that is most definitely worth mentioning, the graphics of this game are on another level. The friends and foes alike, are like they were drawn from a fairy tale, like one of the best graphical artists in the world had free reign. It really is that gorgeous. While you would think this game, is more a childish level of a game, mostly due to these graphics, it is quite serious. You need to pay attention, you need to know where to go and how to get there.

At certain parts of the game, you are getting a clear look at the bigger picture through a telescope. It all just fits perfectly together. I have not really had many games of this caliber in my hands before. Everything screams fun. Everything screams for more. Everything screams for a perfect score.

Save points are all over the place, every screen in itself is basically a pinball mission and it is just something you would not expect. While I was first playing it, my wife came in to have a look at the game and before we knew it, she had been next to me for about half an hour. She said the game was beautiful and it just looked like fun. She did try it out and laughed a few times before handing back the controller, after about 15 minutes. She clearly had fun and she is not even close to a gamer.

In conclusion, Yoku is a game that catches you off guard. Being available on most current generation platforms, this game is a personal favorite for me already. I will be grabbing the game a second time when the physical for Switch arrives as I do intend to take advantage of the portability of that console. I just adore this game and I sincerely think you will enjoy it too.
