Indie Corner: Riddled Corpses Ex

Welcome to our review of Riddled Corpses Ex, a frenetic twin-stick arcade shooter on PS4, Vita and Xbox One.

Riddled Corpses EX is a twin-stick shooter made in the style of 8/16 bit arcade games. Alone or with a friend, travel through diverse locations packed with danger and huge bosses. Choose your character wisely and make good use of their abilities and the special items to progress and destroy the root of evil!

Our review was based upon the review code received for the PS4. This code was kindly provided to us by Cowcat, a French studio also known for Project Xenon Valkyrie+.

I must start off by saying I generally dislike games of this genre, they usually come in procedurally generated levels and well, they are either boring or insurmountable unless you invest tons of hours to really get into the game.

That said, Riddled Corpses Ex is not that way, it comes with a clear story and fun levels. It is on the harder spectrum of the genre in my opinion, but it is not a boring game at all. When you start the game, you can pick from 3 game methods. Story/Arcade and Survival are the ways and I would highly recommend not starting with survival until at least you have some hang of the basic twin shooting mechanics.

In all modes, you are the hero, packed with a basic shooter that can upgrade to multiple bullets to make it easier on yourself. You run around the field, shooting enemies and avoiding to get killed. It sounds oh so easy, but is anything but. At times, this game will feel like a total bullet hell game and yes, that is completely normal.

By default, the enemies will home in onto you and while some are obviously harder to destroy as others, this is all just normal in games like these. I must admit, the first “giant” I faced during the game sessions I had, was quite the unpleasant surprise as they were a lot stronger and also really unexpected to say the least.

But despite the hard nut to crack, this is a fun game. You never feel this game is beyond possible to beat. Sure, it takes a lot of practice, but that is just the appeal of this game. No guts, no glory.

Graphic wise, this is a typical 8/16 bit style game and while it looks very old school, the graphics are very befitting the game. I do wonder what it would look like in pure HD style or an anime style, but I will gladly settle for this.

In conclusion, this is not the must-own game for a collection but does provide a great challenge for the twin-stick shooter lover. If you are looking for an easy game, this is not the one. It provided a good gameplay and proper controls along the way, my rating is a neat 75%.
