Opinion: Square Enix E3 show – Huge disappointment

After some impressive E3 press conferences yesterday, Square Enix kicks off a new day with their conference. Of course, we knew we could expect more Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Monster Hunter but did the company bring some needed surprises to the convention too?

A safe start

At the start of the conference, it didn’t really look like Square Enix was willing to bring something new to the table. We saw a return of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, Monster Hunter, and Dragon Quest XI. Of course, I won’t say that those aren’t great games and I’m sure a lot of fans are waiting on those titles to finally release but it’s a bit of a shame that the company didn’t dare to innovate a bit more. The picked the safe route, offering a lot of sequels instead of original titles. Is this really what fans want to see? Don’t they want to see some brand-new games too? Instead of innovations, we were introduced to a sequel extravaganza and I couldn’t shake the feeling of disappointment.

Extended looks at games we already saw

The main issue with this conference was the fact that we didn’t see enough new stuff. The trailers of Just Cause 4, Kingdom Hearts 3, and more were all premiered during other conferences. The Xbox One conference already gave us an extended look at Kingdom Hearts 3 so simply repeating this in their own conference was a huge disappointment. The same goes for most games they showcased, although we saw some new Tomb Raider footage, honestly, was this enough? I don’t think so. It shouldn’t be an issue to take a closer in-depth look at your games, Bethesda did the same yesterday, you just have to make that your fans are seeing some actual new stuff instead of a trailer you already saw yesterday. I’m really wondering why Square Enix even bothered airing this conference since it really doesn’t offer enough news to the table.

Two new games

On the bright sight, yes there were two new games. Platinum Games is working on Babylon’s Fall which looked nice but we didn’t really see something and then there’s the mysterious ‘The Quiet Man’, which looked promising but again, we know nothing about just yet.

Conclusion:

After watching this conference I really have no idea why Square Enix even bothered showing this. They didn’t have new content to offer and most of the trailers were showcased during other conferences earlier. It really made no sense and it’s a shame to get so hyped for a conference that didn’t deliver at all. There’s nothing more to say.
