Review: Xmorph: Defense

Xmorph: Defense is a combination of tower defense and top-down shoot ‘em ups. Unlike most games you do not need to defend earth against a mighty alien force. Instead, it’s quite the opposite. You are in fact part of a mighty alien force. This alien force is looking for resources on new planets and they’ve targeted Earth. The aliens drop towers at various locations on earth to gather their resources right out of the ground. And as we all know, humans don’t like to share.

You control a flying craft which can switch between 2 modes. The first mode is combat mode, in this one you can shoot your weapons at the waves of enemies that come to destroy your tower. And the second mode is Ghost Mode, in this mode you become invisible and much faster. Ghost mode is used to place and edit towers to defend from the incoming waves. You can change these towers from ground defense to anti-air and even move them around. You can also connect two towers if they are close enough with a wall which blocks the path of the enemy.

Before each wave you have a little time to set up your defenses. You will see the path the enemy will take to reach your gathering tower. You can then set up your walls to make them take different routes, the longer you can make the route, the more time you have to destroy all incoming troops. However, you cannot block them completely they must always have at least one route to reach your gathering tower.

By winning you get some points that you get to spend on upgrades, these upgrades can consist of many things like doing more damage with your main weapon or even having small nukes to deploy on the humans. But also, extra shields for the tower you are defending or even weapons with which the tower will defend itself (for a while at least). There are a bit over 10 levels each with a certain amount of waves. Some levels have boss fights, these boss fights can be very challenging since these spawns a huge Tanks or Robot-like thing that you will need to kill before it reaches the end of the route, they sometimes can even break through buildings and your defenses, so time is limited.

The missions make you move all over the world until you completely take over the entire surface with your metal like spreading ground structure. All this while gathering the earths resources for the Alien race. This is also their excuse for only bringing one defending aircraft; “They were not expecting to encounter intelligent life.”. Xmorph: Defense is a game I had a lot of fun with. It made me think a little bit about StarCraft 2 but with a completely different objective. It’s graphically great and the sounds are very well done. The voice calls of your overlord tend to get a bit too repetitive. They might have done better if they had recorded those warning calls a few different ways to make them less repetitive. Good game!
