Indie Corner: Death Road to Canada

Death Road to Canada is an interesting game. It’s partly text-based and partly Beat ‘em up 8-bit RPG. The premise of the game is to get yourself and a friend to Canada. The world is taken over by bloodthirsty zombies and it’s said that Canada is the only safe place left. And your only way to Canada is the Death Road. You start of by creating your own character or clicking the random button to create random characters, each character has a specific trait, strength and or weakness which will affect the course of the game.

You start the adventure on the Death Road with two. Your self-made (or random) character and a friend. To survive this long trip, you will need supplies like gas, food and medical stuff to keep yourself going. To gather these, you will have to loot grocery stores, pharmacies, factories, houses etc. These will be full of zombies you have to avoid or defeat to gather all your stuff and not die.

You automatically drive a car on the Death Road and will be prompted whenever something happens. Some events are text-based. These can include and argument between the travelers and you will see how this affects the mood or loyalty of each individual. You will also be prompted how much gas you lose while driving and if your characters consume food and such. Other events can include looting. Then the game will prompt you with a selection of different location you can try to loot. Each location is full of zombies and the game will tell you on beforehand, if the horde is big or small and if the zombies are aggressive or calm.

If one of the characters dies during a loot session or another event you will continue with the remaining characters. You can also encounter people on the road. You can then decide if you want them to join your squad or if you want to leave them behind or even rob them, depending on the traits of your character. At night you will be prompted with a shelter request. You will have to spend the night somewhere, and it is very possible that something will happen during the night. Someone will have to stay awake to guard the rest. This will affect their mood and strength during fights.

When you spend the night at some kind of workshop you can task one of your squad members to advance a skill. These skills can come in very handy when something happens. If you have a good mechanic in your team, you can possibly get the car to work again after breaking down. But if the car does break down beyond repair, you will have to run through hordes of zombies in search for a new car and some gas along the way. Once you get in your car the journey continues as before.

I really had a lot of fun with this game. Even though sometimes you simply cannot control whether or not your character dies. When your whole squad is dead you have to restart from the beginning. You will find some special points which you can use in the title screen to unlock certain perks. These do help you throughout all games and not just the one in progress at the moment. All in All, it’s a very fun game and is highly replayable because of the random events that occur. You will have to play a lot though to get to Canada! Good luck on the Death Road!
