Indie Corner: Animal Super Squad

Welcome to our review of the Pewdiepie game called Animal Super Squad.

Animal Super Squad is a physics-based adventure game that lets you play as your favorite animal. Speed through a world full of dangers and bananas. Create your own levels, share them with the community, or forget all that nonsense and just play other people’s stuff.

As it is physics-based, you need to be careful and use the game mechanics as good as you can in order to balance yourself in the levels, jumping at the right place, speeding up your vehicle at the right time and adding in a pinch of luck, you get to advance from one level to the next.

You start off with a chicken and at first, you can basically just move left and right and jump. You advance through the first hectic level and learn to drive a toilet car along the way. sadly it becomes clear quite fast that the levels are quite bland and pose no real value to the game. The real value is in the community created levels and the editor.

Without them, this game would be a dud. The editor is also where all the fun is. Make your level as hard or as stupid as you want and share it across the community. The most “fun” I had with this game was actually on the community levels and I have to say, as underwhelming the game itself was, at least the community levels were quite fun.

Let me explain what I mean about not being fun. There are parts in the initial levels where you are driving around the toilet car, but there are bombs and obstacles all over the place. One such bomb could take out your wheels from the front or back. Now imagine your car having not front legs and you need to jump across a big gap… Sure, you can leave the car, but you don’t fly that far either…. Sure, let’s just kill myself and reset from the save point. It’s all kinda lame and either done on purpose or not really beta tested very well…

Driving up hill is also so damn hard, you got a small boost to use, but it is far from sufficient to go uphill. I know it comes down to user skill, but not this early on in a game… Just too many things are off and really should not be in a game. It often felt this game was either unpolished or just intended to be bad and intending to survive on the community.

In conclusion, there are 2 sides to the story and this game is no exception. A very bad single player mode against a great community driven side. I would rate the story itself just barely 20%, I really would. The single player mode lacks punch and is just so underwhelming, without the level editor and the ingenuity of other players, this game would be a total bust.

Now it is what it is, one great side and one really disappointing one. They even out each other to a perfect 50% score.

My rating is 50%.
