Indie Corner: Shadow Bug

Welcome to our review of Shadow Bug, a new take on platforming where the motion controls make the game!

You are the overpowered ninja hero Shadow Bug! Save your home forest from the evil factory by slicing monsters to pieces. Adventure through beautiful and twisted landscapes full of action and adventure as the ultimate ninja.

Set in an amazing world, maybe I should say surreal, you are the hero. You have 2 basic mechanics to use for the motion control scheme. Use the left Joy-Con to walk left or right. Use the right Joy-Con to point at the place you want to jump towards and slash, slash, SLASH!

Press the Y button to center your pointer and use your movements to become a true hero of the digital playing field that is this game. I have made my dislike for motion controls pretty public on numerous occasions but I guess this is the exception as this game is just perfect for them. Sure, at first this is a hard game because of them, but the more you play, the more adept you become and yes, that is really quickly. Unlike other games, the pointer was just the perfect way to guide Shadow Bug.

While the game also allows for touch controls, it deserves to be played with motion controls. Touch controls are easier though so you could opt for ease of play or a more challenging approach.

Every level has 3 goals for the classical 3 stars approach, reaching the end scores you a star, reaching it in the allotted time or the amount of white stars you pick up along the way. I am sure that speedrunners will love this game as it keeps track how long it took you to finish a level. Coincidentally, that was also my weakest point while playing the game, almost never get to the end in time. In all honesty, I prefer to play more relaxed rather than head straight for the end. I like to really experience the level rather than just rush on through.

And then… Boss fights, suddenly you get a much harder level, filled with enemies that end up with a really splendid boss battle! The first one hit me like a brick wall, that is how cool and hard it was compared to the levels I had faced up to them. After a few dozen tries, I finally did it. I felt really proud of myself that moment!

In conclusion, this game is awesome but it can get difficult quickly, from flying enemies to projectiles being shot at you and so much more, this game brings a nifty variety to the fray and should be loved for it. It makes perfect use of the motion controls and can get tedious at places.

I loved it very much and my rating is 80%.
