Review: Superhot VR (PlayStation 4)

Superhot was one of the most original indie games that released a couple of years ago. This extremely stylish first-person shooter combined its unique visuals with an innovating idea; all your enemies stand still until you move. This resulted in a popular indie that gathered a lot of fans worldwide and made the jump to VR. On PSVR, you can get it in stores as a physical game but is it worth it?

Superhot

We’re not going to explain Superhot again if you want to read about the base game, be sure to read our review here. This Superhot VR isn’t completely the same game but stays true to the amazing mechanics of the original. This means your enemies only move when you move. When you stand still, you see the red enemies standing in the room while aiming or firing their gun at you. This looked impressive in the normal version but it’s something out of this world in VR. You’re really immersed in this crazy world and it feels like you’re part of ‘The Matrix’. Looking around, slowly taking aim, and firing your guns all while avoiding the bullets is extremely fun. Make sure you clear enough space around you, Superhot VR isn’t meant to be played while sitting.

Hard to follow

The big main difference between the VR and non-VR version is the lack of story. In VR, there’s no story, making it a bit too complicated if you haven’t played the original version. In VR, you just enter your computer room where you insert floppy disks to load your level. Each level is divided into smaller sections but be aware, if you die in one of those, you’ll have to restart the entire level. Superhot VR has a lot of trial&error due to this but that’s nothing to worry about. If you want to survive, you’ll need to learn the movements of your opponents and their pattern in order to anticipate on those deadly bullets. Since Superhot VR doesn’t take much time to clear, it’s actually a good thing that it forces you to replay the entire level when you fail.

Without a decent story, it might be hard for you to understand what’s happening but to be honest, a game like this doesn’t really need a great story to succeed. What it does need, are solid controls and those are sometimes lacking in this PlayStation version. First of all, it can only be played using your Move Controllers and of course, the PSVR-headset to track your motions. Looking around isn’t that hard but the game does have some moments where it can barely keep up with your movements. Combine this with the fact that grabbing a gun isn’t always that easy and you understand our frustrations. The controls work okay, to say the least, but some patches might improve the overall quality of it. As it is now, the game is certainly playable but you’ll sometimes get frustrated over the controls.

Conclusion:

Superhot VR is an extremely fun game to play thanks to its great visuals and amazing immersion in VR. Playing this in VR is one of my favorite VR moments of the year without any doubt. It’s a bit of a shame that it’s all over this soon and the controls aren’t always as tight as you might have hoped for. That being said, if you’re looking for an action-packed PSVR game, this is the one you need to play.
