When I first saw a video of Clusterpuck 99, I felt like playing this game was going to be a drag. It did not look appealing at all. I am being completely honest here, it felt like a bad attempt at creating some sort of air hockey and soccer. It just looked like you’d move a Roomba style item and kick around a circle shaped ball of some sort. Score a goal and the most goals in the end wins. Much like real sports.

But I was wrong, this game is a wacky variation of the 2 sports, but it is just soooooo much more. Where do I start, probably with the single player mode. This is basically a set of challenges going from 3 on 3 games to hitting targets with your main unit. You immediately learn that unlike air hockey, the “Ball” if I may call it so, sticks to you. You can shoot it in the direction you are facing and score goals that way. Unless you prefer dunking them into the goal area yourself. I prefer the cool shooting mechanics and preferably from a distance when they slide into the goal at a slow pace… so darn satisfying!
Another part that is satisfying, kicking or punching others into stars. Stars happen to be your worst enemies or your best friends. Touching them is lethal and you basically explode. It takes several moments to respawn at which you can be completely defenseless in a 1 on 1 match. But when you are playing a multiplayer one, you need to rely on your teammates to really deliver! This game is punishing on both offense and defense! I loved it.

So what is bad about the game? The AI when playing on your own… It feels sluggish and well, it is AI after all. The real star of this game, the multiplayer game. Have some friends over and just enjoy the show or slaughter depending on how good or bad you are.
A very important part of the game is the playing field, the variety of them is huge and thus can provide for a very good longevity of the game.

In conclusion, I think this game looks bad if you see someone play it, I really do. When you pick up the Joy-Con however, prepare for battle and come out victorious! My rating for this fun game is 80%
