Review: Tiny Barbarian DX

Welcome to our review of the game called Tiny Barbarian DX, released on Nintendo Switch.

Tiny Barbarian DX is a special kind of game. A game that is either getting a small place in your heart or one that will make your “most hated games” list. For me, it is the first!

Tiny Barbarian is all about passing small bits and pieces of levels in order to advance through the game. Battling your way through pitfalls and a horde of enemies, this game is both unforgiving but not impossible at the same time.

While you can not really die in this game, each time you fall in heroic combat, you just respawn at the beginning of the very small level you are in. Looking at the bigger picture, it is just a dot along the dotted line from start to finish. I love how this game mechanic really makes this game stand out compared to other platforming games.

Tiny Barbarian DX was clearly inspired by the heroic fantasy fiction/genre and will serve up quite a bit of challenge to pass all the levels, beating and cleaving your way through the hordes of enemies. There really are a lot! My favorite enemy, yes, that can exist, are the ones that throw spears at you, they are not the easiest of the bunch, but hey, this game is all about heroic bloodshed!

What really sets this game apart is the cheaper price for the physical version that Nicalis published, which included a very nice set of extras, a picture of which was published on our Instagram account.

The game also has a “horde” mode, which is basically the way this game is also introduced to you. You are on top of what appears to be a pyramid and well, a ton of enemies come at you from all sides, all trying to kill you. Enemies of all shapes and colors will be attacking you, archers shooting arrows at your direction, … When you fall in this introduction, you are led to the startup screen, that introduction is so cool. It really caught me off guard and I play that mode quite often just to practice my skills. I just adore it.

The game is also filled with some hidden jokes, I would recommend anyone playing the game just to make our barbarian stand still! He will flex his muscles, which is so funny. You can perform what looks like a flying elbow in true professional wrestling style. The game is just so easy in its premise, but filled with so much diversity, I actually think the replayability is quite high on this game, but sadly, I am still to beat it (at time of writing this review)

In conclusion, this game, as you noticed already, was something I really enjoyed. I am getting together with a gaming buddy soon to have a go at the co-op play, because I can only imagine that playing this with 2 barbarians at once, it just has to be so much fun. The diversity that this game brings to the table, from jumping on animals to getting through levels to hordes of attacking enemies, I loved it!

My rating stands at

9/10
