The Evil Within 2 is finally releasing next week and we can’t wait to jump into the nightmare once again. Want to prepare yourself for the horror? Perhaps watching some of these movies will help you to get into the right vibe.
These movies were shared with us thanks to a Bethesda spokesman and revealed that a lot of the events in The Evil Within 2 are inspired by the events of certain movies. Wondering which movie you’ll have to watch? Let’s start our special:
Dark Water (Japanese version)
Yoshimi tries to make a fresh start in her life after she won the custody over her daughter. At first sight, everything seems perfect in the new apartment the family moved into. Quickly after that, strange things start to happen. Strange marks are appearing on the ceiling and the roof starts leaking water into the apartment. She calls her landlord but he refuses to do anything about the situation. Things really go South when those weird marks are appearing on a cup of the child and not much later, on the child itself. Yoshimi discovers the origin of the ghost quickly after.
The connection with ‘The Evil Within 2’ is very clear. From what we’ve played before, strange things are happening in the world of The Evil Within 2 and the source of it isn’t always that clear from the start. Just like the mysterious marks in ‘Dark Water’, discovering the truth behind the weird events isn’t always a good idea.
Paprika
Three scientists of the Foundation of Psychiatric Research lose a machine that enables its users to record their dreams, the D.C. Mini. The thief uses the machine to penetrate the thoughts of people while they are awake, to distract them with dreams of themselves and others. Our heroes -Chiba, Tokita and Shima, are assisted by an inspector and ghost called Paprika. Together, they try to identify the thief while their own thoughts are under attack by the thief. The dreams and reality of the movie melt together while the main characters start to doubt the boundaries of science.
The connection with the game isn’t hard to spot. Dreams and reality are very close in The Evil Within 2 so everything you see isn’t always true. Trying to decide and discover what’s true and what isn’t, is perhaps the most thrilling aspect of the game.
Prisoners
How far will you go to protect your family? Kelly Dover is confronted with her worst nightmare. His 6-year old daughter, Anna, is missing together with her friend Joy. When minutes become hours, he starts panicking. The only trail he has is an old camper that was parked in the street earlier. Detective Loki manages to arrest the owner, Alex Jones, but he’s released soon after due to the lack of evidence. When the research of the police is taking longer than expected, Dover decided to solve the problem on his own. How far will a father go to protect his family?
Sebastian, the hero of the game is looking for his daughter, who was wrongly assumed dead. In order to look for her, he connects with the mysterious STEM device that enables multiple minds to connect. Needless to say, just like Dover, Sebastian is willing to take a lot of risks to find his daughter.
Se7en
Detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman), specialized in murder cases has one more week to go for his retirement. Meanwhile, he’s training his younger successor, the enthusiastic David Mills (Brad Pitt). Mills recently moved to an unknown big city with his wife (Gwyneth Paltrow). It’s here where Somerset is suddenly confronted with the most horrible serial killer in his entire career. The detectives soon discover that every murder is connected to one of the seven deadly sins. In the following days, the murderer called John Doe (Kevin Spacey) is claiming new victims on a fast pace.
Just like the detectives in the movies, Sebastian has to deal with ‘human monsters’ who found their way into the new STEM world. The monsters of your nightmares aren’t that scary when you’re forced to face a true serial killer. Finding out who this is and how to stop him will certainly lead to some thrilling moments in the game.
The Cell
Catherine Deane is a psychologist who experiences a new science. She’s able to discover what is happening in the subconscious mind of the other person, including their dreams and private thoughts. For now, Catherine has only used this tool to bring back a young coma patient to the real world. Everything changes when a dangerous killer ends up in a similar coma, while his last victim is still alive but kidnapped in a cell filled with traps. FBI agent Peter Novak’ last resort is Catherine, who will discover the dark secrets of a murderer’s mind.
Jumping into the minds of others and discover their dark secrets is basically what ‘The Evil Within 2’ is all about. Thanks to the STEM device, you can connect with different minds but you’ll soon learn that not every mind is a peaceful place to be in.
The Mist
After a huge storm hit the small town of Bridgton, a mysterious mist appeared. David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his son are surprised by the mist, just like many other villagers, while shopping. Soon, it seems like the mist is nothing more than just a decoy for dangerous creatures who are hiding in it. Drayton fears for his and the life of his son while he’s trying to desperately survive.
The STEM device is the mist of the Evil Within 2. Sebastian jumps into it without knowing what to expect. Needless to say, there are monsters hiding in this device as well, making the link to this movie very clear.
