PGW: Our favorite moments of the PlayStation Media Showcase

If you’ve been following our news today, you might have noticed that PlayStation held a special media showcase to mark the start of Paris Games Week. We went to see it live and share our three favorite moments in this opinion piece.

Alright, first of all, I would like to say that the venue looked impressive. PlayStation picked the perfect spot for their Media Showcase and made sure the press entered the theatre with a big smile on their faces. Lots of drinks, delicious food and an impressive wall decoration, all got us in the right zone minutes before we entered the actual theatre. We first witnessed the pre-show but after that, the curtains lifted and revealed one of the most impressive set-ups ever: multiple screens all merged together as one big 4K-quality projection. We were ready to be amazed! My three favorite moments were:

3) Concrete Genie brings color into the darkness

I like it when media showcases can take me by surprise and introduce me to a new kind of game. Concrete Genie is exactly this for me. It’s not bloody or extremely serious at first sight, but the more you look at it, the better you understand it. In the game, you’ll control a creative boy who gets his hands on some kind of magic brush which enables him to draw pictures on the walls. Thanks to the magic of the brush, these will come alive, helping you out during puzzles. What I like most about the trailer was the premise of the ‘darker layer’. It seems like our new hero is getting bullied. I’m really curious to see how they’ll combine those themes into one colorful game.

2) Detroit: Become Human – Kill daddy

Detroit: Become Human fascinated me from the very first trailer Quantic Dream released. The game has come a long way and this new reveal during Paris Games Week is the proof of just that. In the new trailer, we saw android Kara living together with Todd and his daughter Alice. Kara is programmed to take care of the house and Alice but something went wrong. Based on the conversations, it seems like Kara was rebooted by Todd at one point. The trailer is dark and flirts with themes like domestic violence in a very realistic way. The trailer also showed us that choices are still a big part of the game and they’ll affect everything you’ll do. During the showcase, the daughter shot down her father but it doesn’t always have to end like that. This trailer left the audience behind in a state of silence and shock. A very impressive moment for sure!

1) The Last of Us 2 returns

This already brings me to my favorite part of the Media Showcase; the return of The Last of Us 2. This game was announced as the ‘last game they would show’ and already said it was going to be The Last of Us 2. Little did I know this trailer would still get me by surprise. During the trailer, we were constantly guessing what it was. Was this a new Tomb Raider? Was it something else? We saw new characters getting brutally wounded by a cult we haven’t seen before. At the very end of the trailer, The Last of Us 2 logo appeared, resulting in the loudest applause of the Showcase. I really liked this new direction and I can’t wait to discover who these new people are and why they are fighting each other.

3) Oure

The moment this trailer started whispers and murmurs were calling it ‘Journey 2’ and I have to be honest here, I jumped on that wagon straight from the start… But I was wrong, quickly Oure showed its very own style and feel in this surprising trailer.
Jumping from a skybound tower as a kid that changes into a dragon soaring amongst the skies filled with megalomaniac creatures is absolutely breathtaking.
And is already in the Playstation Store for everyone to enjoy! A true showcase surprise!

2) Shadow of the Colossus

A game that sums up the largest part of my Playstation 2 playing hours is without any doubt Shadow of the Colossus.
The trailer shows how inviting it is to climb these not-so-gentle-giants again by demonstrating how fluffy their fur looks in 4K resolution. The trailer even starts with a visit to a forested area with dense vegetation. Something that wasn’t present in the original and sometimes barren PS2 title. It looks like it was meant to be in 4K since the beginning!

1) Ghost of Tsushima is the next action in your face game by Sucker Punch!

You don’t mess with the samurai… That much is clear in Sucker Punch’s new IP. With their experience from games like Infamous we’re pretty sure Ghost of Tsushima will visually amaze us and provide some fast and over the top action gameplay. For me personally, this was the most convincing announcement of the evening! I hope it’s an open world game as well so we can vanish between the cherry blossoms lit by the moonlight!
