Indie Corner: Death Squared

Today I review a game that brings out many different feelings at the same time! Welcome to my ode to the game called Death Squared!

Death Squared is at its core a very smart puzzle game, where you can go co-op or just go through the storyline on your own! Death Squared is all about cooperation between your squared robots, timing and communication and if all else fails, sheer luck to finish a level! Oh, and if you fail, you kinda explode or fall to your death in a most amusing way.

The game itself is set in a futuristic cubic setting and all revolves around avoiding obstacles, moving your robot to the square with the circle on top, that will make its light shine bright and if all your robots are done, you finish the level. In itself, this sounds like any puzzle game in the boxxle franchise, where you also needed to move the box from 1 point in the small world to the end. But this game is offering so much more.

Whether they are extra obstacles, the extra floors, and levels that you need to use to your advantage, fall pits that only a specific color can cross, forcing you to find a way to use that specific color as a lorry, so to speak. It is truly an ingenious puzzle game and I would rate the idea behind it as one of the best out there! It is both frustrating and incredibly fun at the same time, the thrill of figuring out how to do a simple task sometimes, it is nothing mere words can just describe, it is a feeling you need to experience yourself.

At the same time, the frustration of not figuring out how to cross a specific obstacle, that is also a very unpleasant feeling that you really will experience a few times! I loved it, I really did… Both the good and the bad, I just love puzzle games and this one is top-tier.

When I tried the co-op mode with a fellow editor from our website, it was just immediately clear that this game is a game changer for the genre, forcing us to really talk about levels and how we would tackle a challenge, trying out new approaches and well, not to toot our own horns, a few well deserved high fives when we crossed a very difficult level! Man, that was just an amazing feeling, actually co-operating like the developers intended, I bow my head to them for making this game.

In conclusion, it is quite obvious that this game is something that I loved playing and will probably love for a while to come, I actually switched my Joy Con from the yellow ARMS-ones back to my neons, just to represent the right color of my robots, causing me to make less stupid mistakes like falling off the ledges.

This game was awesome both in its cruelty as in the very high amount of fun it brought to the table, my rating stands at 90%.
