Review: Cars 3

Welcome to our review of Cars 3, a new game on Nintendo Switch in the Cars franchise, a series of animated movies we all love!

When I first started this game, quite frankly I was expecting to see a typical children oriented racing game in the style of Mario Kart, but just that little bit more easy.

I was wrong, so wrong.

It started with the tutorial, where they introduce you to the heroes of the stories, the “Cars” heroes. As they are being introduced, you suddenly realise that you are already driving and in the middle of the tutorial, just follow the clues from the cars around you, they are teaching you the basics, like drifting or jumping. I just adored this part of the game, before I had even realised it, the tutorial was over and I was ready to dive into the game.

In its’ core, this is clearly a racing game and yeah, you could in a way call it a Mario Kart 8 clone, but more the original MK8, not the Deluxe version on Switch. You know, with all the achievements, like getting stars, winning races, … I just loved it.

What sets this game apart, is that it is just nice to play. I can see this being oriented towards a younger public, but it just felt nice to play. It wasn’t overly hard, but it is not easy either. It packs a certain punch and it keeps dragging you back in for more. As a disclaimer, I am currently also playing Oceanhorn and well, I keep quitting that one to go back to Cars and finish another race, hopefully winning it too.

This game also brings a lot to the table, Cup events, Cup Series, Sponsored Team Play, a real Hall of Fame and so much more, among the regular races, you can go all out Race, Battle Race, Stunt Showcase, Takedown, best lap challenge or Master-level events. Among the cup series, you have rookie, Pro and champion settings.

It could very well take a while before you ace all of these! I am a big fan of the Battle races myself and well, nothing beats a machine gun on Lightning McQueen to take down the other cars, haha, it is just so much fun! As it stands and for as far as I can see, there are a total of 23 cars that you can play with.

After finished a race, you are taken to the skills page, where, depending on your driving skills, you get newly achieved skills, like yellow lights, … There are so many skills you can go for, that it may take a while before you really go 100% on this game, giving you a great valued game, but it might be in the wrong price range? I think this game would clearly benefit being a little cheaper.

In conclusion, this game is just another racing game with tons of features that will keep you playing and coming back to it. In my country, this game was announced in the higher price range and that is my only negative remark, for the same price, you should be getting Mario Kart 8 deluxe, despite this game being a decent enough game, it is no Mario Kart 8 deluxe competitor.

Kids will love it and I am giving it a 75% rating because it is very big and I had some great fun with it already!
