Tech Review: New Nintendo 2DS XL

The New Nintendo 2DS XL is a console nobody saw coming. With the Nintendo Switch currently outselling everyone’s expectations, a new Nintendo handheld model first seemed like a rather strange idea. But this New Nintendo 2DS XL isn’t that strange, after spending a couple of days with it, I can only conclude that it’s a worthy member of the Nintendo 3DS family and it might even win over some new gamers.

The box

When you first get a new console, the box is the first thing you’ll notice. The box of this New Nintendo 2DS XL model comes in a different shape than you’re used of. It a lot smaller and thicker than the other boxes in the 3DS family, really sets it apart from the other consoles in stores. The box itself looks good and the designs on the front and back are extremely clear so you know what you’re buying. No hidden surprises here, the box clearly shows what you’ll get.

Inside you’ll find your new console in one of the two different colors, some AR-cards, an adapter and some manuals. It comes packed as a traditional Nintendo product meaning that everything is packed nicely into the box and opening it up truly is a pleasant thing to do. Once you take the system out of the box you’ll immediately understand why this model is considered as an upgrade of the regular Nintendo 2DS.

The upgrade

So, what exactly is this New Nintendo 2DS XL? Well, it’s considered as an upgrade of the Nintendo 2DS while the New Nintendo 3DS (XL) stays the premium model. What has been upgraded you might wonder? First of all, and you can already see this in our videos, this 2DS model has a clamshell design, making it look similar to the Nintendo 3DS. Unlike the regular Nintendo 2DS, this New XL version feels more like a quality product thanks to the clamshell and bigger screens.

Besides that, the system comes with the same technology as the New Nintendo 3DS (XL), meaning it’s a lot faster and comes with an NFC reader/writer inside. Scanning your amiibo was never this easy! It also means you can play New Nintendo 3DS exclusive games like Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and the SNES Virtual Console games. It’s practically the same system as the New Nintendo 3DS with the only major difference being the lack of 3D support. But even without it, it’s a pretty impressive console.

The design

Let’s talk about the design now. As said before, it has a clamshell so for me personally, it feels a lot better than the original Nintendo 2DS and even better than the New Nintendo 3DS XL. The reason for this is that this system is the lightest of the family, making it even more portable. The design of this one really matches the way Nintendo consoles should look like, it really sits nicely next to your Nintendo Switch. The colors look great on both available options but it doesn’t just stop there, the design has some nice modern touches to it.

First of all, the front of the console is made out of a different kind of material, giving it a different look. The only downside here is that the material easily leaves fingerprints on top. Aside of that, the console does have some nice features like a mini-SD slot next to your game slot, so you’ll no longer need to open the entire system to switch the SD card. The best thing about both slots is that they are covered so no dust can ever get in there.

What I didn’t like, however, is the way the cameras are placed. The two 3DS cameras are integrated underneath the system’s touchscreen, making them rather vulnerable to scratches. The face camera is placed in the center of the system, next to the microphone but it sticks out of the system, making it a little less slick. Also, keep in mind that the stylus of this version is incredibly small. The design certainly has some flaws but all things considered, it’s definitely an upgrade and a good-looking system.

Worth it?

One big question remains, is this model worth it? Well for the price, it definitely is. This really is a great addition to the Nintendo 3DS family and offers the same fast and flawless experience as the New Nintendo 3DS XL with only the lack of 3D images. If you never turn on the 3D effect, this is without a doubt your best option. It’s lighter but it keeps the modern look you’re expecting from a handheld console nowadays.

Nothing about it feels cheap except the price in stores. If you don’t own a Nintendo 3DS handheld, this New Nintendo 2DS XL might even be your best option if you’re not a fan of 3D images. It looks nice, comes with a charger and immediately gives you access to an impressive library of games filled with incredible stories. The New Nintendo 2DS XL certainly has a purpose here and it’s convincing more people to start enjoying the Nintendo handheld games. It’s perfect to have next to your Nintendo Switch console.
