Review: Mighty Gunvolt Burst

Welcome to our review of this Mega Man clone called Mighty Gunvolt Burst. From the creator of Blast Master Zero comes this new retro-styled shooter. So, if you know Inti Creates, the studio behind this game, you know I am talking about a Japanese company with tons of great games, but recently, of course, Blaster Master Zero which was also released on Switch.

Aside from that, they worked on numerous actual Mega Man games as well as some Crayon Shin-chan games and the odd Naruto game. They were founded by former Capcom staff after all.

Now about the game itself, it could simply be the next installment in the Mega Man series and while you should consider it a tribute to a great game series, it is also incredibly tough to play. The difficulty level is rather high throughout the game and well, 40 retries are what it took me to beat the first level and I am quite experienced in this genre…

The game itself is very elaborate, having many extra options, like editing your own weapon, personalizing the experience as well as collecting pixel stickers, tons of them actually. Go into the details of making the weapon and you will find 1 option that makes your HD rumble function go off each time you are near a special hide out or secret passage. This is by far the most valuable feature I have found in this game.

Another item you can collect, the pieces of fruit you find along the way, they can be used to regain parts of your health after getting hit. These are sadly smaller pieces of health being revived and usually, you end up using half or all the available fruits.

Now let us talk about the levels, while they are not the longest, with a few save points along the way, quite a lot of times it is more about trial and error in order to proceed to the main boss of the level. Even with the best persistence, I could bring forth, I failed to really get into the game. I mean, seriously, there are limits to how many times you can bring up the desire to advance a few screens at a time. At one point I was at 45 retries just to proceed to a save point…

In conclusion, this game is everything you wanted a Mega Man game to be, but not so hard. I am not a big fan of games with insane difficulty levels and this one surely applies! The 8-bit retro graphics are very nice but in the end, the graphics do not make the game.

I wish I would have a better rating, but I am stuck at 60% for this one, make it a little more approachable and I would be giving a completely different rating, but balancing between non-stop retries just to advance a mere few screens, no, not for me.
