Telltale is famous for their own remakes of different popular stories like The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Batman, … and many others. It’s all about living the story and watch the outcome of all of your decisions while seeing the main storyline unfold. Since the premier of the Guardians of The Galaxy movie, this franchise has been popular due to its great acting, comical undertone and lining up the pieces throughout the different movies set in the Marvel Universe. Does the game live up the same expectations as the movie’s debut or not? Let’s find out!
The Guardians of the Galaxy movie was all about entertainment and it will be the same for this new Telltale adventure. The whole story within this game has been built up with the Marvel movie in the developer’s mind all way through, not that it’s following the same story as the movie but it keeps the same “feeling” throughout the whole playthrough. The game has some cool looking action sequences, some funny moments and a decent chunk of the story has been revealed to keep us excited for the next one. Even though the game follows the same components as the movie, it’s just that tiny bit better just because of the features that Telltale has to offer in any of their own adventures. The first episode showed some QTE-events, important decision making sequences and a couple of “exploring” moments. Although these moments aren’t plenty, they’re there and it makes the game’s story enjoyable to watch and experience. Expect the same Guardians of the Galaxy (just with a different look) but another story within their universe.
Telltale’s side story of “The Guardians of the Galaxy” is the kind of story-driven game you would expect from Telltale.
The first episode starts off very casual. Peter Quill is listening to his preferable music and all of the sudden, the crew gets contacted by the Nova Corps asking for the Guardians’ help. Of course, nothing is for nothing and Peter starts negotiating for some interesting terms. Nova Corps is being attacked by Thanos, the ultimate evil purple looking space guy. In this first chapter, the game’s being introduced to the player on how to progress throughout the game, while getting psyched thanks to Peter Quill’s funky music. Once the introduction has been taken care of, Thanos’s ship will blast your ship’s engines which makes the ship descend to the nearest planet. It seems that this planet has taken the interest of Thanos and the team’s crazy enough to figure out why. Eventually, a confrontation with Thanos is inevitable and the team takes notice of an ancient relic that goes by the name of the Infinity Forge… and this is where I leave the rest of the story blank in order to avoid any other spoilers.

Telltale’s side story of “The Guardians of the Galaxy” is the kind of story-driven game you would expect from Telltale. There isn’t much to do while playing this game, other than making important story decisions that will definitely impact the main story’s output, exploring areas searching for clues and button mash the hell out of your controller’s buttons when a QTE-event emerges out of nowhere. There isn’t much innovation going on within this game but it’s a game that players would expect when they’re fans of the Telltale series. If you liked the previous Telltale games, you’ll probably enjoy this one as well. Don’t expect “too much depth” when it comes to the game’s features. However, they did manage to make the “exploring” a bit more fun by adding some thruster movement. Some areas will offer you the ability to search other heights and lows by using the Star-Lord thrusters. It’s a small add to the game but it certainly doesn’t feel out of place.
The Guardians of the Galaxy movie was all about entertainment and it will be the same for this new Telltale adventure.
The game is just one big story that follows a great tempo. There wasn’t a moment within the first episode where I thought “This is boring…”. There’s a great build-up in terms of story and there’s a lot of action packed sequences that keeps you active along the way. The comical undertone the game has will definitely take the edge off of things. The voice acting has been great as well. Even though it took me some while in getting used to all of these new voices, it was overall a pleasurable performance. I do have to mention, that I wasn’t a big fan of the graphical presentation of the game. It has some beautiful moments and Telltale did a great job creating these different characters and areas but it sometimes felt simplistic.
Conclusion:
Telltale has another amazing adventure on its pallet and it immediately felt like any other Telltale adventure which is, of course, a good thing. However, I would like to see some innovations from the developers because I feel like they aren’t taking too much risk when they’re developing a new adventure. Of course, there was the subtle implementation of that “thruster movement” within the exploration part but it doesn’t get me excited to play it another time.
The first episode was an excellent beginning due to the fact that it already offered some important decisions making moments and I’m excited to see how it will influence the main story further. The story is likable due to a great tempo, the comical undertone, voice acting and a variety of action based sequences. The graphics are okay but sometimes feel a bit simplistic.
