Tech Review: Nacon Revolution PS4 Controller

It looks like PlayStation wants to enter the professional eSports scene by releasing third party Pro controllers. We already discussed the Razer Pro Controller but now, it’s time to check out Nacon’s Revolution PS4 Controller, an official licensed product that is supposed to be the solution for eSports players looking for more professional gear. But is it really that good?

Out of the box

When you buy this controller in stores, you’ll immediately know you just bought a quality product. The controller comes in a nice box including the controller, some Nacon stickers, a travel case, cable, extra weights and instruction booklet. The box is greatly designed and looks really appealing. Once you take out the controller, you’ll notice its familiar design.

Just like Razer’s Raiju Controller, this Nacon Revolution controller looks more like an Xbox One controller than an official DualShock 4 controller. The layout of the buttons is very similar to those of the Xbox One but of course with a PlayStation layout. It’s a lot bigger than the normal PlayStation 4 controller but the weight remained the same.

A nice little detail is the LED light on the camera stick, giving the controller a more slick design. Besides that it’s worth noting that this controller only works when it’s connected to your console with a wire. This wire is 3 meters long, so you’ll have plenty of room to move around in. This might be a downside for the more casual gamers but professional eSports gamers would never use a wireless controller due to input lag. That being said, have both options would have been the best.

Extra buttons

Just like any Pro Controller should have, this one come with some extra programmable buttons. You’ll find four additional buttons on the back of the controller, ready to be programmed just they way you would like it. This works great in shooters where you can, for example, map the throwing function to one of the extra buttons on the back. Or why not put the running button there? Basically, the back buttons are perfect for L3 or R3 actions since you’re able to use them way faster this way. But how do you change these settings? Well, the handy companion app is your best friend.

With the companion app, you can change everything to your liking. You can change the color of the LED-light, adjust the amount of rumble, change the triggers and map certain actions to certain buttons. Since this is a PlayStation 4 controller, however, not every game will use the same layout but the companion app enables you to save four different profiles. You can change between these profiles with just one click of the button. The companion app is a powerful tool and is very easy to use, transforming this controller into a true Pro Controller

Conclusion

This controller isn’t cheap (110) but it does come with great features. The ability to map the buttons the way you like, using a very intuitive companion app is by far the biggest plus of the device. Besides that, it’s a great controller that has the right size and weight to become your new favorite controller. Do note that you can only play with it using a wire but this can’t be a problem if you’re aiming to become a professional player. This is the best Pro Controller on the market at this moment.
