Review: River City: Tokyo Rumble

As a fan of the old River city series this game is a disappointment , you don’t have to agree with me. But if you do like to find out why, then read this!

You start as a hot-headed highschool student named Kunio. Your job is to stop the lion clan from taking over Tokyo, one section at a time. When you defeat enemies you get XP and money so you can buy upgrades and stat-boosting clothes.
Well, this is pretty much the story in a nutshell. It’s not much of a difference from the old game from 1989 , in fact, I feel that this game is just an excuse for a bad remake they charge money for

Nostalgia is overrated!

Yes nostalgia , the sole reason River city : Tokyo Rumble will get a few bit sales because there will always be die-hard fans who will buy anything from their favorite franchise , and that’s ok! But I’m here to write something for the guys that don’t know the game. I feel like there is no work put in this whatsoever , I’d rather play the 1989 one on an original NES than to spend money on this excuse of a game.

It’s Easy , SO EASY.

step 1: Find a wall
step 2: Spam the punch button
step 3: defeat any boss at level 1

Yeah, that’s a big oversight they left in from the old games , I mean they didn’t really change anything it’s just another way to get some money out of the fan’s pockets.
If you take this into account (and that you can just outrun every enemy except bosses) than every level system or upgrade is obsolete.

Conclusion:
A game should be fun OR have a good story , this one has neither. Only fans of the original series will have a small bit of fun. Others, not so much. But hey who am I to say what you can and can’t buy. But in my opinion , stay away from this even if you’re a fan because you will just be disappointed. To put into perspective, I have played better flash games on Newgrounds which were copies of this game.
