Review: Warhammer 40.000 Eternal Crusade

Writing this article is very hard for me , I have played Warhammer and Warhammer 40K on table top and they are amongst the best board games ever made. So playing this game I was disappointed.
When you first open the game up you get a neat title screen and a simple character creation with 4 slots. You can choose between 4 races and as you play the game you can rank up each character individually. As you rank up you get points to upgrade skills and buy weapons. Because each character has its own points you cannot “farm” points on your high rank just to buy weapons for your low guy.

When you’re done creating you can participate in a small tutorial which teaches you the basic combat mechanics. Once you’re done with that you can finally jump into the 4 game modes! Or more like 1 + 3 extra modes if you’re up to the waiting queue time. First, there is the quick battle option which I strongly recommend unless you got 1hr+ time to wait for any of the other game modes , there are just not enough people playing the game at the moment.

A shooter with a 40K skin
The gameplay is very simple it’s just a normal lobby shooter with a Warhammer 40K skin , it’s not even up to standards with normal. it has a lot of small bugs and while not game-breaking they are still annoying. Things are not balanced and the combat feels clumsy. The races have minimal to no difference in classes , it doesn’t feel like a battle between space marines and the Eldar, but more like space marines VS space marines because they all have the same classes and same damage multipliers from my experience.

To make things worse , micro transactions. Yes your €50 shooter comes with micro transactions. This totally defeats the whole point system thing to upgrade your weapons because you can buy weapons and armor with stats, not only cosmetics. I frown every time I see a paid game with micro transactions and Warhammer is no exception.

There is still Hope!

Now that my little rant is over , not everything is lost. The developers admitted that their game is rushed (even when they had over 4 months of alpha testing) and they promised to fix balancing issues and bring better modes and better general gameplay. Will they hold true to their word? Only time ill tell.

Conclusion:

Although this game is FAR from ready , it has a lot of potential and it is still a decent game to zone out to if you like the Warhammer 40K universe. But it will need some tweaks before it can grow big so I would wait and see what the future brings before buying this game.
