Review: Transformers: Fall of Cybertron

The war against the Decepticons has been raging on for centuries. We’ve been fighting them day after day, year after year. We lost a lot of our friends during this war and now we’re losing our home as well. Cybertron, our home planet lost all its resources during our war, we must unite and find a new home. It won’t be easy to find a new world, especially when the Decepticons are waiting for us behind every corner.

A surprise return

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron isn’t a new game, it released a couple of years ago but re-released on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 a couple of days ago. The game got a surprise release on the digital market so you might have missed it. Without any marketing budget, this is a game a lot of gamers will miss but that would be a shame to be honest. Fall of Cybertron isn’t your traditional ‘movie-to-game’ product, instead, you’ll discover a very addictive third person shooter while playing this game.

The moment you start playing, you’ll be dropped into the action-packed tutorial where you’ll learn the ropes of the game. Soon you’ll learn how to take cover, shoot enemies, change your shooting direction and how to transform into your vehicle mode. The best part about the tutorial is that it doesn’t feel like a tutorial at all. The game looks sharp right from the start and the amazing soundtracks sucks you straight into the battlefields.

Transformers of War

The reason why Fall of Cybertron is such a good game is because it follows the blueprint of Gears of War. This means you’ll have to jump from cover to cover if you would like to survive for longer than five minutes. Besides cover, you’ll need to shoot the enemies; of course, you’ll have a lot of different guns to do this. Ranging from powerful shotguns to sniper rifles, when it comes to guns, the game got you covered (pun intended).

Autobots, roll out!

The actual gameplay is very action orientated and will guide you from one big battle towards the next one. The levels are filled with enemies and bosses to defeat so you’ll always have something to destroy. Talking about destruction, you can destroy the cover of your enemies to expose them, this results in a very dynamic fight. It’s also a big plus that you’ll control a lot of different Transformers during your adventure, you’ll get to know some of the most iconic and lesser-known robots up close and personal. Every Transformer has its own set of weapons and advantages like more speed or better health. It’s great to have this kind of variation while playing and it is things like this that transform your time with the game into a pleasant time.

Vehicle mode

A Transformers game wouldn’t be a Transformers game without the vehicle mode. Each Transformer can change into a different vehicle but all feel rather the same to control. Of course, they are different in look but due to the type of missions, controlling the vehicle is never really innovating. You can change into this mode at any time you want but some segments demand a vehicle approach, these segments are a lot bigger and offer more open space to tackle your enemies. Since you’re a futuristic and brilliant robot, your vehicle can fire a lot of deadly weapons at your enemies to inflict massive damage.

Changing into your vehicle is pretty fun but don’t expect it to be groundbreaking. Fall of Cybertron is designed as a cover-based third person shooter, the vehicle segments are a nice addition to the regular gameplay but really nothing more than that.

Online battlefields

It’s also worth mentioning that the game comes packed with a multiplayer option, we didn’t face that many problems finding other players and the matches resulted in a lot of fun. My personal favorite is the Escalation mode where you have to fight off waves of enemies. Sounds straightforward but thanks to the online co-op, this is truly a fun mode to play with others. Besides this there are, of course, more traditional modes like death matches, capture the flag, headhunter and hold the point modes. They offer enough variation to keep things fresh and there’s just something really cool about battling other players as a Transformer/Decepticon.

Conclusion

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron isn’t a new game but it still feels like a modern game thanks to the great third person action. The only problem is the lack of variation in the environments and the missing pieces of the story. If you’re looking for a game that will put you in epic battles, accompanied by great music, this is a game you should play. We also recommend you to play it with others online since this can truly increase the fun a lot! If you missed the game in the past, this is your chance to play the best version on the market.
