Days of Infamy is an historical fps. It focuses on WWII and you can play as a British, German or American soldier. You can choose between a few of the most heroic battles of the second world war. The objective of the game is somewhat similar to Star Wars Battlefront 2 to give you an idea. You have certain points of interest where you have to stand long enough to conquer that point. When all points are conquered you win the game.
I start up the game and first chose single player. Immediately the battle of Normandy has my attention. I imagine the battle starts at the amphibious vehicles, following is a long run on the beaches surrounded by explosions and bullets passing by my head. Pittyfull enough it’s much less heroic than that.
So first off you can choose between the 3 largest partakers of the second world war. The US, the Wehrmacht and the Commonwealth army. The battles vary between the first battles in Italy until the last battles in Belgium.
If you have chosen your alliance and the battle, your ready to start. At least if a tutorial would’ve said so. Ofcourse it’s still beta and I shouldn’t nag about these minor details. Anyways now you can choose again, between different kinds of soldiers. For instance you have one for support, assault, gunner,… I didn’t know what class to pick so of course I went with machine gunner! Because “MACHINE GUNS”.
So we’re starting. The hardest part now is keeping everyone apart. Because the only difference there really is, is their language. So some overhead symbols should suffice to help you. Luckily enough they included the possibility to turn off friendly fire. What they didn’t have though is an automatic reload. And that’s something that bothers me enormously. So when you finally capture a point and want to secure it you suddenly meet an enemy to only be shot in the face because you forgot to reload; #truestory. Another thing that they should fix in my opinion is the fact that there is no reticule. Maybe they went that way for the sake of realism? But now it’s almost mandatory to use close aim. My style of playing is when an enemy pops up you shoot and then aim. Be ware that that’s nearly impossible in this game.
The game itself is very hard. I’m new to the game, I haven’t even played insurgency. So at first a simple tutorial would be welcome to new players especially. It wasn’t there yet I assume. But the game is very unforgiving. You have to know what you’re doing or you’ll be defeated in less than 5 minutes. My record is less than 1 propably.
Of course you can’t ALWAYS expect jaw dropping graphics from an indie game. But still it looks very pretty. It captures the feeling of war times. There is barely any sun, you can only see a glimpse behind the clouds, nor many colours. So it’s a bit gloomy. But what do you expect? It’s a war game of course so it fits perfectly. The textures themselves in the game look pretty good. You can’t see the pixels for instance, which indicates it’s of a higher quality.
It probably will be a while until A.I. will be better than a human competitor. And Days of Infamy is no different. Just as I thought to master the controls and the game I jumped into multiplayer. Big mistake. Poor teammate. Lost majorly. I guess these kind of games are the kinds where the online community takes it very very seriously. But no hate in that of course.
Early conclusion:
It’s a game with great potential. It has some minor bugs and with a bit of tweaking it should be alright. Also I would consider adding some other game modes. Now it gets a bit boring after a while and personally I expect a bit more from a paying game. Some of the minor points could be personal but I can see how others could easily follow my train of thought on these. That said, it’s a solid base for a great WWII indie!
