Indie Corner: Beeftacular

Beeftacular is fast!
Beeftacular is responsive!
Beeftacular is smooth!
Beeftacular is bloody!
Beeftacular resembles Meatboy in such a way that some might call it plagiarism…

This will not be a typical review. It will be a comparison between one very original game and a game that might at first sight look like a cheap knock-off of that very original game. It pains me that I need to write this down today, because I try to write as many fair reviews as possible. Sadly, the similarities between one of my favourite games and this one are too big to ignore. Beeftacular is a heinous platformer that tries to get away with stealing someone else’s ideas. At least, that’s what I think about it.

In a world without Meatboy, Retrific’s ‘fast-paced platformer’ might actually be a good game. It is indeed fast-paced, gory, fresh, and fun. Each level, you have to get rid of the enemies by either shooting them or knocking them out. Since you only have a limited amount of ‘bullets’, and the level is timed, you need to adjust your strategy with every next loading screen. Alternatively, there are also levels that are focused on dodging big obstacles that kill you when you touch them. A recommendation goes to the art style and sound, which is deliciously raw. Very suitable for a game in which you play as a cube of meat…

Yes. You have read that correctly. The main character of this game is a meat cube that has to kill ‘rotten flesh’ and has to dodge obstacles that can slice you up really quickly: saws, spikes, etc. Yuck. Moving around the level is bloody too, as your cube of meat leaves a trail of red juice wherever it goes. Fantastically original, were it not that it has been done already!

So far my review of this game. I know it is very short, but I simply cannot make myself write more about a game that is almost entirely the same in concept as another game that was released first as a free-to-play flash game, and later on gaming consoles and Steam. I refuse to believe this is all a coincidence or a ‘happy accident’. I consider this stealing and/or lazy game developing. Therefore, I refuse to grade this copy-paste game. At least Meatboy had somewhat of a story to it…
