First day of Gamescom 2016 and we had the pleasure to witness a new trailer from Bethesda Softworks of their upcoming game Prey. Prey introduces us to the space station “Talos 1” which is being overrun by an unfamiliar alien species and it’s your job to stop them…
The presentation of Prey was a lot more impressive than Dishonored to be honest. This game got me excited for a couple of reasons. This Prey is a lot different than the original one. It looks like Arkane Studios combined 2 popular games like Dishonored and Bioshock to create something familiar and new at the same time. The first minutes showed off the space station “Talos 1” and I immediately had a flashback to that immersive, “ready to explore”- kind of feeling I had when I entered the “Rapture” in Bioshock. The game did a follow-up with the introduction of your enemy. It’s an alien shaded species that learns how to adapt itself when it’s being chased up into a corner. The first enemy was one of the lower classes of the alien species that could mimic anything in the world. The player of the game was constantly shooting at everything that moved, just to make sure it wasn’t one of those little beasties. The further the game progressed, the bigger the enemies grew, literally!
The game offers some guns that the player can use to defeat the aliens. The developers said that weapons and ammo are very limited so you’ll have to use them carefully but they also liked to mention that Prey has access to some of the craziest weaponry. For example, the glue gun can be used to “petrify” your enemies but it can also be used to heighten certain areas when the highest point is a bit unreachable. Weapons aren’t the only things that can be used to defend yourselves in the game. The player will often find Neuromodels within the game that will enhance his human abilities like strength or even go on a different road and harness alien abilities. One of the coolest alien abilities the game offers is “Mimic”. Mimic gives the player the ability to change himself into every object that’s available in the game but he has to see it. In our presentation, the player transforms himself into a cup which gives him the opportunity to advance through those tight spaces.
These abilities can also be combined which gives the player the opportunity to create something special. For example: our main character had to get to a certain point but it was too high, so he formed a plan where he would transform himself into this mechanical robotic eye and eventually blasted himself with “Kinetic Blast” so it would launch him high into the sky and reach his point. I wonder what the developers will have in store for us. They did warn us, the more you use an alien ability, the stronger their presence will be. If these combinations don’t work for you, you can still go the classic way and blast your way through the alien species. If you have the feeling that you’re being overrun, use focus to slow down time and plan your attacks.
I loved what I’ve seen so far and I really want to get my hands on this game as quickly as possible.
