Yesterday, I went to the Microsoft booth at Gamescom for a hands-on with their next upcoming game, Halo Wars 2. Halo Wars 2 is a RTS game set in the Halo universe and it’s coming around very well. The game itself is all about gathering your resources and using these elements to produce infantry or vehicle units, all with their special abilities.

With this hands-on, we’re taking a better look at the multiplayer mode “Stronghold” where a domination game is being played with 6 people. You have two teams of 3 persons and they all have one goal: catch as many bases with your team as fast as you can and of course within the provided time limit. The team with the most captured bases within the time limit wins. If a team manages to capture all bases long before the time limit, there’s this “Sudden death”- feature where the opposite team has 60 seconds to capture one base of the dominating team. If they can’t succeed, the 60 seconds time limit exceeds and the team loses.

This game mode is all about anticipating the enemy’s team and creating a team of units ready to attack. This mode helps you to understand some of the basics of this RTS. If the opposite team uses a lot of infantry units, you might as well get an anti- infantry team ready to wipe those enemies out. Each team has to select a commander that will provide the player with different abilities. These abilities can be used on the battlefield but after activation, it needs some time to recharge. Using these abilities at the right time on the right spot, is the key to gain victory!

Check out our hands- on direct feed footage. Keep in mind, the game runs smoothly at 60fps but the capture card could only capture footage at 30 fps. Enjoy!
