Review: Trials of the Blood Dragon

Trials of the Blood Dragon was shown at E3 as one of those games you could download instantly after the reveal. I love those kinds of surprises and I haven’t stopped playing since! Ubisoft marries 2 great franchises and it’s so good it’s a wonder they hadn’t thought of this before!

The UBI is strong with this one

First off props to Ubisoft to bring us one of the stronger conferences at this year’s E3. It was fast-paced and full of action. Not unlike Trials of the Blood Dragon. At its core this is a Trials game “pure sang” apart from the platforming elements but you will spend most of your time on your bike. I was a bit sceptic at first but the blend of biking and platforming works well and throws a completely new dynamic into this already solid franchise. You will be racing through a spectacular retro setting whilst shooting the communist army! And yes you will face actual Blood Dragons and “outbiking” them!

Everything breathes 80ies VHS and neon-lit palm trees in this game!

This fresh take on the series formula is fuelled by an original Blood Dragon story. It’s somehow tied with the Far Cry expansion we all know deserves a stand alone series! Everything breathes 80ies VHS and neon-lit stages and the game is scored by these retro tunes you could spend all night listening to.

The best feeling after a harder level!

You will be playing as Rex Power Colt’s kids who are trained in combat to infiltrate and defeat the communist armada who are trying to tap into the Blood Dragon’s secret. The story is told through short animated clips before every mission and the dialogue between our heroes continues within the level itself. The story is ridiculous but it just fits the game and some of the dialogue is so ambiguous you will laugh twice when hearing their harsh comments.

FIRE exclamation mark!

The siblings’ room acts as a main hub where you can explore their belongings such as memorabilia you unlock by completing the levels. You can also listen to the Power Glove radio that holds great soundtracks you unlock! It’s great they’ve got Power Glove to do the music again! It was very quiet around the artist for a while, now we know why! When your game is scored by such an amazing artist you can’t stop daydreaming of racing a Countash against an imaginary Lazer Raptor through Miami while listening to the amazing Power Glove radio! The levels themselves are grouped into “movies” you activate by clicking on the posters. They each hold a main theme that will be reflected through the great variety in scenery within every cluster of levels.

Conquer the leaderboards!!!

The game starts off easy and you’ll think that it’ll be a piece of cake to get a max rating on your level. But then you remember this is a Trials game. You will notice the tracks become increasingly difficult so you’ll have a hard time reaching a perfect score and get to the end within the time limit, let alone finish some of the harder levels! To help you out a ghost of your previous attempt will ride along you to show you how well (or how bad) you are doing trying to beat a friend or ranked nemesis’ time!

Closing note:

Trials of the Blood Dragon is a daring addition to the series and is a very real complete Trials experience. You will have to master you speed, balance and shooting skills all at the same time in this neon-lit, legendary scored and action packed Trials game! And apparently, you can get the game for free on PC if you complete the demo? Head over to this link for more information!
I am still trying to beat my 10 year old nephew who somehow seems to be born with perfect skills for this game! And Ubisoft, now we know the “Blood Dragon” IP is still alive, is this some kind of tease for another Far Cry Blood Dragon instalment?

8/10
