Although I think plenty of game developers are going to showcase their VR games, and the technical side of E3 will all be about ‘even nexter-gen gaming’, I think E3 2016 will be the year when I can finally balance out my love for old school games and sequels in successful franchises, and my interest in brand-new stories. To me, it’s always about the games themselves. Here is my list of games I would like to get more information on during E3.
These are my predictions:
“Untitled Unknown Star Wars Game: The Enigma That Will Sell Lots of Preorders before release and hopefully doesn’t suck as much as Battlefront”
With the huge success of Episode VII, and then the enormous amount of merchandise, I’m quite certain there is going to be some kind of release concerning the next Star Wars game. There are bits and pieces that might point at a game being in development, but up to this point, it’s mostly rumours. Still, I’m curious. The PR campaign for Battlefront did its thing, even though the game was not really 100% ready on the day of release *cough* pay too much money for ‘extras’ that should have been in the basic game *cough*. Here’s hoping Star Wars 1313 comes back…
Dishonored 2
Dishonored was an excellent game. It had the atmosphere, it had the story, it had the highly original world, it had the sneak system, and the side missions offered plenty of lore and fun besides the main quests. And now, there is a sequel announced. I’m looking forward to brand-new gameplay, perhaps a playable demo, and more details. Better get my mask dusted off!
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Ninja Theory is a developer that has released a colourful mix of games throughout the years. Their list includes “Heavenly Sword”, DmC: Devil May Cry, “Kick-Ass” (a tablet game), and other bits and bops. And now they are working on a game set in Celtic mythology. And it’s about a female warrior who needs to deal with her inner demons. So it’s her descent into her own madness. It’s psychology. It’s atmospheric. And it’s AWESOME.
Ninja Theory doesn’t like to keep its cards in hand, but instead throws them on the table one by one in the form of developer’s diaries, giving the players the chance to find out how the development of the game is going, and what the different technologies and engines of the game are like. Together with a short playable demo, there is already quite a lot know about the game, but not really about its story. So I’m rooting for a cinematic story trailer, just like the announcement trailer, which is simply gorgeous. I occasionally re-watch it. Sometimes even in 360°.
Final Fantasy VII (Remake)
Because it’s Final Fantasy VII, and nothing beats the classics. Now they still have to do FFVIII and FFIX, and I can go back to the time when games had 80 hours of content, and that’s simply the storyline without the secrets and mini-games and side-quests.
Mass Effect Andromeda
After ME3, I felt a bit sad. The ending of the game was not what I expected it to be. It was not as epic as I expected it to be, even though the game itself was a lot of fun. Commander Shepard didn’t get the ending I think (s)he deserved. A big shame!
Now, a new chapter is announced, set years after the events of the original Mass Effect trilogy. I’m looking forward to exploring new worlds, using new tactics to defeat exotic aliens, and trying to romance every living thing on my ship, including my fish in the captain’s cabin.
I want to see an official reveal trailer. I want to see a playable demo. Just give me something related to Mass Effect. Anything, really. I’m hooked on this already. Damn.
