Review: Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Wii U)

The Summer Olympics in Rio are held in a few weeks, to celebrate that, two video game legends: Mario and Sonic join forces in the Olympic game Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Go to Rio and compete for a golden medal with your favorite characters from both franchises.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is a party game with 14 mini games each representing a different Olympic discipline. It is certainly not the best game of 2016 but it’s so much fun to play. There are simple mini games where you just have to smash on a button to go faster like swimming and running but sports like football and rugby are  more complicated. Although some mini games feel repetitive after a while; there are way more sports that are so much fun and addictive once you get the hang of it.

Depending on which game mode you play you will be able to choose your character who you want to play as, with different strengths and weaknesses that will influence the way you play. So only taking your favorite character is not always the best. When you play Heroes Showdown, a game mode where you choose a between Team Mario or Team Sonic and compete in different sports events, it’s very important that you pick the right characters for the sport in order to win.

The boring mini-games became more exciting just because I really wanted to beat my friends in it. With the easy and simple gameplay, it is very easy for people to join into the game and be decent from the start. When you are a really competitive person like me, you can play a tournament with your friends to decide who is the best in each event our play the heroes showdown to show who is the better player overall

The graphics are noting special but the game is filled with the classic Mario and Sonic look we all know and love. It’s  well-rounded, incredibly colourful and none without its moments of fast-paced action. It’s not going to win any awards for the most detailed graphics on the market, but that’s not really what the game is about. The details are amazing and funny. If you are a Mario- or Sonic fan you will love the looks of this game.

Conclusion:

This game is definitely not the best, but it’s what you expect from it: a Summer Olympic themed party game with Sonic and Mario. There are fun mini-games you keep playing and mini-games that are less fun. It is a fun casual game that everybody can enjoy especially if you play it with friends
