Review: Project Cars Game of the Year Edition

One of the best racing simulators has released its game of the year edition. We are of course talking about Project Cars, the game by fans, for fans. While it’s not a racing simulator for everyone, it’s definitely the best one out there. Since its release in May 2015, Project Cars is the leading racing title in new technologies such as 12K and Virtual Reality and one of the most beloved game for the eSports programs as well

Slightly Mad Studios

What makes Project Community Assisted Racing Simulator, or better known as Project Cars so good, is that is has been developed from the start with the community. They had their say in how the game should be, the amount of realism and much more such as which cars, which circuits, tuning options… Thanks to this decision and cooperation, Slightly Mad Studios has one of the best racing simulators ever made.

The ultimate tuning game

As mentioned in the intro, Project Cars might not be a game for everyone. The game contains an insane level of customization. You can personalise your wheels, brakes, amount of fuel… Nearly everything is tunable in the options menu. For the real car & racing lovers, this is the absolute top, but for casual gamers, it might be overwhelming. Due to the lack of a tutorial, you have to find other means to make you familiar with all the customization and the different parts and what they do. Luckily there are websites out there where you can find other people’  setups.

Turn on the assists and end up against a wall

For the amateurs or people who just want to race, you can personalise your driving experience by switching on the assists, letting the game handle specs or shifting. This makes it the perfect way for newcomers to enjoy the game. Without those, Project Cars would simply be too hard to master for the casual gamers. Die-hard racers can take full control of their vehicle by switching everything off. Project Cars also supports an incredible amount of racing wheels for a more accurate experience.

But don’t be fooled, even with all the assists on, it will never be an easy game. You need to know what you are doing in order to keep your car on the tracks and get to the finish line in one piece. Controlling the cars is very difficult; they are very sensitive. The slightest lack of concentration will end up in a crash.

One of the best career modes ever created

In Project Cars, you can race solo or online, do a practice run or a time trial. But it’s the career mode that runs away with the gold medal. You are able to choose different careers. Start as a carting racer or do you want immediate access to prototypes? There’re a lot of different ways to start the career but the most pleasing is without a doubt the ‘from zero to hero’ campaign. Here you start as an inexperienced cart racer and end up as one of the top drivers in the prototype competition.

Conclusion

The GOTY edition goes further down the path that was laid out in 2015. The success of Project Cars is much deserved. It offers everything you want: Fast cars, realistic handling and gorgeous circuits. If you haven’t got the base game and you love racing, you must definitely get the Game of the Year Edition. Know what kind of game you’re getting, but if you want to play one of the best race simulators, this is the game you simply need to own.
