Disney Infinity 3.0 is a huge success, with new figurines offering the best of Disney, Marvel and Star Wars in one bundle. Until now, Star Wars was the main focus of Disney Infinity 3.0 but that’s about to change in Marvel Battlegrounds. It’s time to call in the Avengers and their friends and enemies; it’s time to enter the arena!
A light story
Unlike the more story-driven additions like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Marvel Battlegrounds keeps things light on the story. It takes place between the events of The Avengers and Age of Ultron but you’ll be able to complete it in less than an hour. The story isn’t as important as in the other expansions and that’s a bit of a shame really. The developers already proved that they can create interesting stories and it feels like a lot of potential went lost in Marvel Battlegrounds. That being said, the short story is entertaining to play, reminding us of the great Marvel movies. The story has that typical Marvel sauce and humor all over it so you’re in for some laughs! The dialogues of Black Panther are without a doubt one of the highlights of the campaign.
So the story is too short to really deliver an impact but it’s not the focus point of this expansion. Unlike other play sets, Marvel Battlegrounds truly innovates on its gameplay, unlocking something you haven’t played before in the Disney Infinity 3.0 base game.
Ready to fight
Marvel Battlegrounds doesn’t offer missions or quests to collect a thousand things. Instead, you enter the multiple arenas to fight with other Marvel heroes and villains. The best part about it is that you’ll be able to fight your clone. Ever saw an Ant-Man fighting another Ant-Man? Well, it’s possible now and it’s really great to see. The arenas are developed with care and the hardcore Marvel fans will have no trouble recognizing some iconic locations. The battles are fun thanks to the innovation that can be found in them. Disney made sure that the Marvel figurines of Disney Infinity 2.0 feel fresh on the Marvel Battlegrounds. Each figurine is restyled with new attacks and defenses, resulting in a chaotic but addictive game! Also note that new characters like the Hulkbuster are playable here and you know you’re in for the ultimate fan service.
A lot bigger than Civil War
That’s not all however; the game can also be enjoyed in local multiplayer with up to four players. Marvel Battlegrounds is a huge leap forward when it comes to multiplayer. For the first time ever, you’re able to play Disney Infinity with up to four players! The multiplayer is a bit chaotic with all those characters running around in the arenas but it offers a lot of fun above all. The multiplayer also supports the Power Disks to include unplayable characters to the battles. The characters are great, the environments are amazing; this is a mode you’ll enjoy for a very long time to come! The only downside about it is that you can’t play it online with others.
You don’t need to own all of the figurines
All of this sounds like a lot of fun and it truly is but you might wonder if you need to own a lot of the Marvel figurines before you can really start enjoying the game. Lucky for some, Disney integrated a system that gives you a weekly character you can mess around with. Like what you saw? Unlock the character with Trial Coins. Thanks to this, you’ll be able to play as your favorite Marvel character without actually owning it. So why would you get that figurine anyway? Well, having your own figurine has its advantages of course. Your figurine will level in the Battlegrounds and you’ll be able to save your progress on the figurine. Enabling the possibility to use the stronger figurine in the other Disney Infinity 3.0 games. Owning your own figurine is still recommended but is not necessary to enjoy the game, which is a big plus!
Presentation
The presentation of this new play set is just great. Visually, Marvel Battlegrounds feels right at home in the Disney Infinity universe and the characters are streamlined like we’re used of since the release of the first Disney Infinity game. Everything looks colorful, streamlined and yet filled with details to keep the fans happy. The soundtrack is of the level you expect and manages to set a certain atmosphere for some of the stages. If you like the Marvel universe, you’ll love the presentation of this new set for sure.
Conclusion:
All in all, Marvel Battlegrounds adds something new and fun to the Disney Infinity 3.0 universe. It’s great to be able to play with your favorite Marvel heroes and villains, together or with friends. The environments and characters all feel right at home and will make a lot of Marvel fans happy. Too bad you can’t enjoy the game online and the story is forgettable. Besides that, Marvel Battlegrounds sure is an interesting new way to enjoy your Disney Infinity 3.0 set.
