Review: Assassin’s Creed Syndicate – The Last Maharaja DLC

Now that we know Ubisoft won’t release a new major Assassin’s Creed game, we’re looking for content to quench our thirst. We already got Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia and India but now, the publisher released the final mission pack for Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate. Since this is the last major update for a major Assassin’s Creed game, it’s definitely worth checking out but is it worth it?

The Last Maharaja

When it comes to Assassin’s Creed DLC, they can easily be divided into two groups. You have the big expansions, introducing new and interesting characters like the Jack the Ripper DLC. On the other hand you have regular missions packs, enabling the players to enjoy even more content along with the main missions. Those DLC packs aren’t that special or worth remembering to be honest. The Last Maharaja isn’t a big innovation expansion but manages to raise the bar for the mission DLC packs. It offers ten new missions focused around the Indian royalty Dunleep Singh and his adventures with the British India Company. Templars want to kill Singh of course and it’s your task to keep him safely out of the hands of the Templars. Yes, this is another typical Assassin’s Creed game filled with classic Assassin’s Creed gameplay.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate

Great gameplay

The reason why ‘The Last Maharaja’ is better than the usual missions packs is the way the ten missions are handled. Unlike previous missions packs, every single mission in this DLC feels fresh and fun to play. The ten missions manage to demonstrate the best of Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate. There’s stealth gameplay, combat gameplay, train gameplay and you’ll even visit the most impressive location of Syndicate again, the bank.

Solid Assassin’s Creed gameplay

Finishing the story of ‘The Last Maharaja’ won’t take long, it will take you approximately up to three hours to complete the missions. Once you do so, you’ll be left with a feeling of satisfaction but nothing really special. Sure, the missions managed to show you why Syndicate is considered as one of the better Assassin’s Creed games but there’s nothing really worth remembering. It’s not a bad experience at all but it’s a little flat, some more side-missions would have been great for example.

No distractions

If you’ve finished the story of Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, you’re probably in the best position to play the DLC pack. We think ‘The Last Maharaja’ is best enjoyed without any distractions. It’s a very straightforward and streamlined experience; it would be a shame to break the fluency of the DLC with unfinished quests or overlapping stories. If you haven’t finished the main game, however, you’re still able to start the Last Maharaja but keep in mind that it might interfere with the things you were doing before.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate

It’s great to see that the DLC comes in such a streamlined version, demonstrating the strengths of the franchise. This DLC pack truly manages to demonstrate why the Assassin’s Creed franchise became so popular to start with. That being said, it’s not that special or innovating.

Conclusion

So is it worth getting? That depends on your thirst for Assassin’s Creed content. If you want to play more Assassin’s Creed and can’t wait for the next major installment, this is certainly an option worth considering. The Last Maharaja definitely offers fun missions in a streamlined ‘best of’ experience. If you’re not a big Assassin’s Creed fan however, this DLC pack isn’t worth getting. The story offers more of the same and doesn’t come with important events. It’s more of the same and it’s a great Assassin’s Creed experience but we expected a little more creativity to be honest.
