A Hat in Time is a game from the German studio Gears for Breakfast and is shaping up to be a very good platformer collect-a-thon.
The game is inspired by earlier Rare and Nintendo games such as Mario 64, Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong. If we want to have this unique game released, we’ll have to help the developers with Kickstarter.
A Hat in Time is developed by 8 people around the world with a $0 budget. To release the game, the team needs at least $30 000 in order to pay the developers for their effort.
Of Course the Kickstarter also have some stretch goals like a co-op mode on $50 000 and two new levels and full voice acting for $ 110 000.
The game is set to release on Steam in early 2014 but the team would also like to release on Wii U but they can’t promise that yet.
A word from the team:
Basically the dev team consists of 8 people around the world. I joined in late January as the environment guy, aka I make the levels you jump around in. Now due to real life issues and what not the team put in what they could but money is always an issue. However I am in a unique position, I am able to work on the game fulltime and thus I gave up 4 months in order to turn this game into what it is now. However, we plan to continue working on this till the end of the year but I can no longer work on it if I do not get a full years wage, this will heavily affect the game as I am the only one who is really working on the level art. The others are too busy.
An example, I basically did all of the city on my own along with my leader who did all the harder effects stuff. That took a lot of time on my end and I can’t repeat that unless I get paid so we’ve set the goal to 30,000 as a safety net but the reality is that’s not going to cover my yearly wage, to be honest I’d estimate we’d need a little over 100,000 in order for me to put my all into this.
It’s also seems to be a huge part of my life as I’ve been doing game development for 10 years, I’m self taught and even though my work matches that of a AAA game, I have never been able to get a real job in the games industry. This means, this game, is my last attempt at working with games. If nothing comes of it, I basically end it all, all or nothing. I’m not looking for pity but I wanted to share the story with you so you’d understand the people behind this game.
True fact, our character modeller Vince recently had a kidney transplant and yet the guy still continued working on his hospital bed, if that doesn’t reflect our intentions, I don’t know what else can.
Thank you for reading, thank you for donating and have a nice day
