NEWS: Disney closes LucasArts – Star Wars 1313 and First Assault put away

Disney decided to close down LucasArts as a development studio.

In result of this decision, Disney won’t be making any Star Wars games in the future. Both 1313 and First Assault were cancelled.

The official statement:

“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games.

“As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”

New Star Wars games can still be released in the future but will have to go with a licensed based model instead of an internal studio like LucasArts to create those games. Technically both 1313 and First Assault could be picked up by another licensed developer but this didn’t happen.

For now it looks like both games will never see release.

Aside from the games, 150 employes were told to leave their desks.
